The Home
That Hugs Back.
Your guide to hygge — the Danish art of warmth, comfort, and making winter the best season of the year.
Did you know the English word “hug” and the Danish word “hygge” share the same 500-year-old root? Both came from the Old Norse hugga — to comfort, to embrace. That’s what this home is built on.
What Is Hygge?
It’s Not a Trend.
It’s a 500-Year-Old
Way of Living.
Hygge is the Danish and Norwegian practice of creating warmth, comfort, and connection — especially in the dark winter months.
It’s the candle you light before dinner. The blanket you pull over two. The soup that takes all afternoon. The evening with nowhere to be and no reason to rush.
It’s also a verb. The Danes say vi hygger os — we are hygge-ing. As in: we are doing this, right now, on purpose.
Americans have always known this feeling. We just didn’t have a word for it. Until now.

The Person Behind the Posts
Hi, I’m Elise.
I’m a suburban mom in Minneapolis who discovered hygge the winter my second daughter was born — overwhelmed, overscheduled, and desperately in need of a slower way to live.
A Danish friend gave me a candle and a word. That word changed everything.
Now I spend my winters with purpose. And I’m here to help you do the same.
